Furniture for Apartments
Moving into an apartment for the first time, or moving from a house into an apartment, very often presents particular furnishing challenges. At Residence we can assist you in purchasing beautifully designed and made furniture that will give you the comfort and convenience you will want for every room in your apartment.
Whether you are moving into an apartment as your first home, because you no longer have need of a house, or you are simply setting up a pied a terre or holiday apartment you need to consider very carefully what furniture will best meet your needs for functionality, durability, ease of care and your every day (and night) lifestyle.
In particular you should ensure that you have adequate and appropriate access to the things you use on a daily basis and efficient and accessible storage for the things needed less often or seasonally.
If you have not already done so we suggest that you read our general furniture buying tips first before starting to consider furniture for your apartment.
We suggest that when you are planning the furniture for your apartment you do the following:
- Obtain or draw a floor plan showing all room measurements, swing (turning direction) of doors, position and sizes of windows (including sill height) and the position and height above floor level of all power points, gas outlets, air conditioning vents and similar features which must remain accessible;
- Confirm the ceiling height and the position and height of any intrusions – air conditioning ducts and the like;
- Check the sizes of door openings through which your furniture must be moved – lounges and other furniture pieces which are over 75cms in 2 or more dimensions can present difficulties;
- If your furniture must be moved up or down stairways check that it will clear overhangs and can be moved around landings;
- If an elevator must be used to move your furniture ensure that there is sufficient height to fit – some elevators have removable ceiling panels and you may need assistance from the building manager in using lifts;
- If you have access to your new residence a technique which we find very useful is to mark out on the floor the position (“footprint”) of the furniture in each room – you can then walk around the proposed furniture layout and ensure that the room will not be uncomfortably crowded.
Here is a list of the types of furniture we recommend you consider for your apartment:
- Beds with drawers under the mattress so you can put away the large items you need only on a seasonal basis – electric blankets, duvets, beach towels and the like
- If your bedroom is on the small side consider a bed with a doona foot so that the room looks more open and less crowded
- Bedside chests with drawers in varying depths so you can conveniently have all the things you need nearby at your bedside
- Tallboy chest of drawers providing plenty of storage – but with a smaller floor footprint
- Armoire with drop-down or slide out writing table top for home office use
- Dining table with shallow drawers (with concealed pulls) for table cloths, large platters and the like
- Entertainment unit with drawers for convenient storage of your DVD’s, CD’s – our entertainment unit drawers are fitted with soft close fully concealed heavy duty Hafele drawer runners to give you years of trouble free use
- Modular wall units for display and storage of your personal treasures, photographs, books and other items you want to have readily available or on show
- Coffee tables with drawers or display tops
